This role supports UNEP's project to strengthen private sector engagement on sustainable peatlands management in the Congo Basin, a critical ecosystem facing pressures from extractive industries. Job Purpose
The purpose of this consultancy is to develop and deliver high-quality, evidence-based communication products, including targeted briefs and outreach materials, in both English and French. These materials will effectively engage investors and financiers, advocating for the inclusion of peatlands' value in their plans and investment decisions. The role aims to promote investment in sustainable and inclusive landscape management in the Congo Basin, thereby strengthening private sector engagement and contributing to the conservation of this vital ecosystem. The work will support negotiations and secure financing for sustainable peatlands management.
Responsibilities
Develop a detailed inception report outlining methodology, work plan, and stakeholder engagement. Conduct comprehensive literature and data reviews on peatland ecosystem services, fiscal incentives, and project outputs. Map key private sector audiences, including international investors, sector-specific investors, financial institutions, industry associations, financiers, and conservation finance actors. Create two substantive briefs: 'The Business Case for Investing in the Congo Basin Peatlands' and 'Partnership Opportunities for Sustainable Development in the Congo Basin Peatlands.' Develop bilingual social media content and targeted email outreach materials for each brief. Prepare presentation slide decks for events and meetings. Support stakeholder validation and review processes, incorporating feedback. Conduct private sector consultations to ensure relevance of materials. Prepare event materials such as concept notes, agendas, speaker briefing notes, and participant handouts. Develop a training module on using outreach materials effectively.
Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in environmental economics, communications, investor relations, private sector engagement, or sustainable finance is required. Proven experience developing compelling business cases, investment briefs, or communications materials for private sector audiences, preferably in environment or sustainable development sectors, is essential. Experience with international organizations is an advantage.
