Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. The Science and Technical Assistance (STA) branch supports the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions by providing scientific and technical input and managing scientific work. The STA branch also delivers technical assistance through projects and training. This internship is within the STA branch in Geneva.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to support the Science and Technical Assistance (STA) branch of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in implementing cross-cutting activities for the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions. The intern will contribute to various tasks including technical assistance, capacity-building, knowledge management, project implementation, stakeholder engagement, and intergovernmental processes. This role offers a valuable opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of the BRS conventions and other Secretariat-coordinated programs, working within an international and multidisciplinary team environment.
Responsibilities
The intern will assist the STA branch in implementing cross-cutting activities for the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions. Key duties include conducting research and analysis on technical and policy issues related to chemicals and waste management. The intern will also contribute to preparing technical documents, briefing notes, presentations, and communication materials. Additionally, responsibilities involve supporting the planning and organization of meetings, workshops, and webinars, as well as assisting with project implementation, monitoring, and reporting. The role also includes contributing to knowledge management initiatives and providing general support for the branch's collaborations with parties, regional centers, and other stakeholders.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to the internship's focus is necessary. Applicants must be current students in their final year of a university degree program or have already completed their degree.
Skills
Research and analysis, technical document preparation, communication materials development, meeting and event organization, project implementation support, knowledge management, stakeholder engagement, fluency in English, knowledge of an additional UN official language is an advantage.
