Organizational Context

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) promotes sustainable towns and cities globally. Its East & Horn of Africa Regional Office supports programming across nine countries, with the Kenya Country Programme (KCP) playing a strategic role due to its Nairobi location. KCP implements projects focused on urban governance, service delivery, housing, and resilient cities, aligning with Kenya's development priorities and the New Urban Agenda.

Job Purpose

This internship aims to support the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officer within the UN-Habitat Kenya Country Programme. The intern will gain practical experience in tracking programme and project implementation status, monitoring key indicators against work plans and results frameworks, and ensuring data quality. This role contributes to the effective oversight and reporting of UN-Habitat's urban development initiatives in Kenya, assisting in the compilation of reports, documentation of best practices, and support for evaluations and assessments. The position offers an opportunity to understand the practical application of M&E in international development projects and contribute to the programme's success.

Responsibilities

The intern will support the monitoring of overall programme implementation status and assist in tracking programme and project indicators, outputs, outcomes, and targets against approved work plans and results frameworks. Responsibilities include reviewing data for inconsistencies and errors, managing the internal M&E system, and ensuring quality assurance of monitoring templates and recorded data. The intern will also support project teams in third-party monitoring activities, mandated evaluations, needs assessments, and annual surveys. Additionally, the role involves assisting in compiling monthly, quarterly, and annual project reports, organizing M&E-related workshops and training sessions, and documenting change stories, case studies, lessons, and best practices.

Work Experience

Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, applicants must have a field of study closely related to Monitoring & Evaluation, Social Science, Development Studies, Statistics, or Project Management. Previous UN internship experience is desirable but not mandatory.

Skills

Computer literacy in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite), ability to interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, willingness to understand differing opinions, and fluency in oral and written English.
