Organizational Context
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the UN entity focused on sustainable urbanization and human settlements. The Regional Office for Africa (ROAf) supports member states in addressing rapid urbanization challenges, aiming to build resilient, peaceful, and economically developed cities. This internship supports programmatic reviews, reporting, advocacy, and communication efforts within the ROAf in Nairobi, Kenya.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to support the UN-Habitat Regional Office for Africa (ROAf) in Nairobi, Kenya, by assisting with programmatic reviews, reporting, advocacy, and communication activities. The intern will contribute to the office's mandate of promoting sustainable urbanization and addressing urban challenges across Sub-Saharan Africa. Key contributions include supporting the preparation of meetings and conferences, drafting written outputs, generating communication materials, and conducting research on urban development topics such as housing, climate change, and humanitarian crises. The role is designed to provide practical experience in knowledge management within an international development context, contributing to the agency's goal of fostering equitable prosperity and resilience in African cities.
Responsibilities
Assist in organizing and preparing for in-person and virtual meetings, workshops, and conferences, including managing invitations, participant coordination, and logistical arrangements. Support the creation of written outputs, such as speeches and internal content, through research, drafting, and revision. Contribute to the reporting of the office's programmatic achievements and support the activities of the programme review Committee. Generate communication materials for diverse audiences and conduct research on urban development, with a focus on housing, climate change, environment, and conflict/humanitarian crises in Africa. Facilitate interaction with country offices for project concept note development and other collaborative efforts. Prepare discussions and webinars related to urban resilience and support the office's reporting and communication efforts in liaison with field and global offices.
Work Experience
While professional work experience is not required for this internship, applicants are desired to have experience in developing, reviewing, or editing knowledge information, such as research work or project documents. The ability to summarize and analyze technical urban and housing content for various audiences is also beneficial. A field of study closely related to the internship is required.
Skills
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Ability to summarize and analyze technical urban and housing content. Strong communication skills in English. Good understanding of new and evolving technologies and digital platforms. Advanced knowledge of standard software packages.
