Organizational Context
The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is part of the UN Secretariat, responsible for coordinating humanitarian responses to emergencies. OCHA ROAP in Bangkok facilitates effective and principled humanitarian action in Asia and the Pacific. This Information Management Assistant role supports the daily operations of the Information Management Unit, provides crucial support during emergencies, and contributes to preparedness activities.
Job Purpose
This role is essential for supporting the Information Management Unit within OCHA's Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. The primary purpose is to provide robust information management and geospatial analysis to ensure coherent and effective humanitarian responses. This includes integrating data, producing high-quality maps and online services, maintaining critical datasets, and supporting analytical outputs for preparedness and response efforts. The position plays a key part in transforming data into actionable visual products and facilitating data sharing among humanitarian partners, ultimately contributing to alleviating human suffering during disasters and emergencies.
Responsibilities
The Information Management Assistant will perform geospatial data analysis, integrating baseline and operational information to produce and update maps and online services. Responsibilities include maintaining Common Operational Datasets (CODs) and thematic datasets, ensuring they are documented and accessible. The role involves creating and maintaining geospatial databases, supporting data modeling, and analyzing disaster impacts. The incumbent will develop and maintain online GIS portals and dashboards, serve as a focal point for geospatial data requests, and produce various information products like maps, infographics, and reports. Additionally, the role contributes to managing online platform content, developing guidance materials, delivering training on GIS tools, and supporting needs assessments and data collection platforms.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in geographic information systems, data analysis, mapping, data visualization, or information management is required (five years with a first-level university degree). At least three years of experience using GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and Business Intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI) for decision-making is mandatory. One year of experience in data analysis and GIS within the humanitarian field in the Asia-Pacific region is also required.
