Programme Management Intern: Support Counter-Terrorism Programming
Organizational Context
The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) was established to provide leadership on counter-terrorism mandates, enhance coordination among 45 Task Force entities, and strengthen capacity-building assistance to Member States. The United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre (UNCCT) within UNOCT aims to support Member States in implementing the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. This internship is situated within the Countering Terrorism Section of UNCCT at UN Headquarters in New York.
Job Purpose
This internship offers a valuable opportunity to contribute to substantive research and analysis on critical counter-terrorism issues, including countering the financing of terrorism, border security, cybersecurity, and the use of new technologies by terrorists. The intern will support the preparation of various project documentation, technical inputs, and visibility materials. A key aspect of the role involves monitoring global trends and developments in counter-terrorism, with a focus on regional engagements in Central Asia and the Arab region. The intern will also assist in organizing events and processing data for UNOCT databases, gaining practical experience in program support and international counter-terrorism efforts. This role is designed to provide hands-on experience within a dynamic UN office.
Responsibilities
Contribute to substantive research and analysis on counter-terrorism issues, supporting the preparation of project documentation, technical inputs, visibility materials, reports, briefing papers, talking points, background notes, speeches, and web stories. Participate in relevant meetings and draft summaries and reports. Monitor global trends and developments in counter-terrorism, focusing on areas such as countering the financing of terrorism, border security, cybersecurity, new technologies, and weapons of mass destruction, as well as regional engagements. Process and organize relevant information and data, categorizing it for program relevance and inputting it into UNOCT databases. Assist in organizing fact-finding missions, training courses, workshops, round-table meetings, conferences, and other events to enhance Member State capacities and policies. Perform other assigned tasks as required.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to counter-terrorism is necessary. Proficiency in standard office software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required. Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its Charter are essential.
