Consultant to support the numerical modelling for Regional Assessment Reports on Disaster Risk Reduction (RAR27) through case studies
Organizational Context
The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the UN system's focal point for coordinating disaster reduction efforts and ensuring synergies. It guides, monitors, and reports on the Sendai Framework's implementation, supporting regional and national actions. The Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean (ROAC) produces Regional Assessment Reports (RAR) on disaster risk reduction.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to support the numerical modelling of multi-hazard probabilistic risk assessments for the upcoming Regional Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction (RAR27). The role will focus on utilizing these results in four selected countries to advance the achievement of sustainable development goals and promote the implementation of the Sendai Framework. The consultant will contribute to quantifying the cost of inaction by reviewing progress and challenges in disaster risk reduction and disaster risk-informed sustainable development, and by proposing methodologies for assessing the cost of not making decisions, thereby highlighting the urgency for financing sustainable development through DRR.
Responsibilities
Support the numerical modelling of multi-hazard probabilistic risk assessments for RAR27. Utilize risk assessment results in four selected countries to advance sustainable development goals and the implementation of the Sendai Framework. Quantify the cost of inaction by reviewing progress and challenges in disaster risk reduction and disaster risk-informed sustainable development. Propose methodologies and approaches to assess the cost of not making decisions. Highlight the urgency for financing sustainable development through DRR. Engage with expert technical stakeholders and peer reviewers. Contribute to the development of regional and global reports.
Work Experience
At least fifteen years of experience in disaster risk reduction and the development of regional or global reports is required. Experience in multi-hazard probabilistic risk modelling, including wildfires, is essential. Experience engaging with expert technical stakeholders and peer reviewers is desirable. Experience with a UN, major government, or international organization working on probabilistic risk metrics is also desirable.
