Consultant for Informal Conflict Resolution
Organizational Context
The Office of the United Nations Ombudsman and Mediation Services (UNOMS) serves as the informal pillar of the internal justice system, providing impartial and neutral services to address work-related concerns of UN employees. This consultancy role operates under the general authority of the UN Ombudsman and immediate supervision of the Regional Ombudsman or Chief of Service.
Job Purpose
The Consultant for Conflict Resolution will provide comprehensive informal dispute resolution services to UN Secretariat employees and other affiliated personnel. This involves facilitating mediation, offering expert advice on conflict resolution techniques, and promoting awareness of UNOMS services through outreach and skill-building activities. The role aims to help parties resolve workplace conflicts voluntarily and confidentially, fostering a more harmonious work environment. The consultant will also develop relationships with visitors, advise on available services, and provide systemic feedback on conflict patterns when necessary, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the internal justice system.
Responsibilities
Provide alternative dispute resolution services to UN employees and affiliated personnel. Conduct mediation sessions, acting as a neutral third-party to facilitate discussions and agreements between conflicting parties. Maintain strict neutrality, impartiality, and confidentiality in all interactions. Gather information, identify issues, explore options, and generate solutions for workplace conflicts. Deliver outreach initiatives to raise awareness of informal conflict resolution services. Conduct skill-building activities to enhance conflict competence among staff. Offer expert advice on appropriate dispute resolution techniques. Collaborate to resolve employment-related problems and advise visitors on available UNOMS services. Assist with follow-up actions and gather feedback to improve service delivery.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in dispute resolution, management, or legal fields is required. Direct experience in providing informal conflict resolution services within a workplace setting is essential. Experience in an international organizational setting is desirable.
