Organizational Context
The Department of Global Communications, through its Visitors Services Section, engages and educates the public worldwide to foster support for the United Nations. This internship is within the Guided Tours Unit (GTU) in New York City, directly interfacing with the public to provide tours and information about UN Headquarters.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical exposure to public engagement activities at UN Headquarters. The intern will support the planning and delivery of outreach, visitor engagement, and special events. The role involves assisting in the development of thematic tours and educational initiatives to enhance visitor experience. Additionally, the intern will contribute to communications and promotional materials, research innovative engagement strategies, and gain hands-on experience in the operations of the Guided Tours Unit, contributing to the overall visitor services mission.
Responsibilities
Support the planning and implementation of outreach, visitor engagement, and special-event projects, including research, coordination, and material preparation. Assist in developing thematic tours, educational activities, and other initiatives to improve the visitor experience. Gain practical exposure to the operations of the Guided Tours Unit, understanding how tours are prepared and delivered. Communicate complex UN issues to diverse audiences effectively. Conduct research and contribute to communications and promotional materials, such as articles, social media content, photos, and videos. Support innovative visitor engagement initiatives, including the use of new technologies like VR/AR and AI, and assist in developing revenue-generating activities and products.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, familiarity with new technologies (VR/AR, AI), basic photo/video editing skills, and experience with design tools like Canva or Photoshop are desirable. Knowledge of American Sign Language is also a plus.
