Civil Affairs Intern: Research, drafting, data collection and Innovation and analysis
Organizational Context
The Department of Peace Operations (DPO), specifically the Policy and Best Practices Service (PBPS) within the Division of Policy, Evaluation and Training (DPET), is responsible for developing and disseminating peacekeeping policy and doctrine. PBPS supports DPO and DOS by improving peacekeeping effectiveness through best practices, guidance, and policy support, and leads reform processes.
Job Purpose
This internship within the Civil Affairs Team of the Policy and Best Practices Service aims to support the development and dissemination of peacekeeping policy and doctrine. The intern will contribute to research, drafting, data collection, and analysis related to Civil Affairs, assisting in the creation of guidance materials, communication products, and the capture of lessons learned. The role supports the overall mandate of DPET to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of peacekeeping operations through knowledge management and policy development.
Responsibilities
Assist in research and drafting for Civil Affairs policy, guidance, and practice surveys, covering topics like local peacebuilding, community engagement, and youth engagement. Prepare reports, concept papers, policy documents, and communication materials. Capture lessons learned and identify good practices from peacekeeping missions. Develop communication and advocacy products to highlight Civil Affairs' contributions. Attend and summarize meetings and consultations. Support the organization of events and workshops. Assist with project management and team coordination. Proofread and edit documents. Conduct data collection, analysis, and information management. Explore and propose the use of AI tools for tasks such as report summarization and data extraction.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, experience in research, drafting reports, preparing/editing/translating policy documents, and supporting event organization is desirable. Experience with databases, data visualization software (e.g., Power BI), and strategic communications is also beneficial.
