Organizational Context
This position is within the Innovation and Research Coordination Unit in the Office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva. The Economic Affairs Officer reports directly to the Chief of the Unit, contributing to the unit's research and coordination mandate.
Job Purpose
The Economic Affairs Officer's purpose is to conduct economic and sector analysis, developing socio-economic databases and applying econometric models to monitor the consequences of economic shocks on trade, investment, finance, and sustainable development. This role involves drafting analytical studies, identifying policy proposals, and attending international meetings to gather information and engage with peers. The position also supports intergovernmental bodies by preparing reports and statements, and contributes to the overall delivery of the work unit's services through various duties and training activities.
Responsibilities
Key duties include economic and sector analysis, such as developing socio-economic databases and qualitative information to monitor the impact of global or regional economic shocks on trade, investment, finance, and sustainable development. The role involves interpreting and adapting econometric models to analyze policy effects and drafting inputs for technical papers and analytical studies. Responsibilities also encompass identifying and analyzing policy proposals, attending international meetings for information gathering and discussion, and preparing speeches for senior staff. Additionally, the officer will provide intergovernmental support by preparing inputs for reports and statements for intergovernmental bodies and summarizing interagency meetings. General duties include performing other related tasks and participating in training activities.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive experience in economic research, analysis, policy formulation, or applying economic principles in development programs is required. Desirable experience includes quantitative research on trade policy and development, using trade databases, quantitative analysis with Stata and R, analyzing economic shocks, working in international organizations, and research communication with data visualization.
