Organizational Context
The United Nations Support Office in Haiti (UNSOH) provides support to the Gang Suppression Force, the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), the Haitian National Police, and the Haitian Armed Forces. UNSOH also delivers technical assistance to the Organization of American States (OAS). This role is situated within the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General in Port-au-Prince, reporting directly to the Assistant Secretary-General.
Job Purpose
The Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary-General (ASG) in Haiti plays a crucial role in supporting the implementation of UNSOH's mandate. This involves identifying, analyzing, and reporting on key political developments and emerging issues in Haiti. The role requires proactive engagement with various stakeholders, including government officials, political actors, civil society, and international partners, to foster collaboration and coherence. The Special Assistant will manage the ASG's schedule, prepare briefings and correspondence, and contribute to strategic planning and reporting, including input for the Secretary-General's reports to the Security Council. This position is vital for ensuring effective coordination and advancing the mission's objectives through informed advice and efficient operational support.
Responsibilities
The Special Assistant will coordinate and facilitate key activities, including identifying and analyzing political developments, monitoring trends, and reporting on issues relevant to UNSOH's mandate. This involves keeping the ASG informed, assisting in strategy formulation, and ensuring follow-up actions. The role includes managing the ASG's meetings, high-level visits, and preparing necessary documentation such as briefings and summaries. Responsibilities also encompass handling correspondence, liaising with state institutions, political actors, and civil society, and drafting analytical reports. Furthermore, the Special Assistant will foster collaborative relationships with mission components, UN entities, government authorities, and international partners. The role involves providing political analysis and advice, assessing implications, and recommending actions to advance mandated objectives. Support will be provided for planning and budgetary processes within the ASG's office, including contributing to work plans and managing office operations.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in political affairs, development, humanitarian work, or diplomacy is required. Experience in a UN peace operation or similar field operation is also mandatory. At least one year of experience working in a front office as a Special Assistant or similar role to a senior official is required. Experience in strategic communications and excellent writing skills are desirable.
