Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority, promoting sustainable development and advocating for the environment. The NDC Act & Invest project, a UNEP initiative, supports countries in developing and implementing ambitious, science-based Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and mobilizing capital for climate action. This role supports the implementation of these critical projects.
Job Purpose
The Climate Consultant will provide essential support for the day-to-day implementation of the NDC Act & Invest and NDC Partnership Action Fund (PAF) projects across various African countries. This includes ensuring workplans and documentation are delivered on schedule, coordinating with internal and external partners, facilitating stakeholder events, and submitting regular progress and risk updates. The role is crucial for translating raised ambition into coherent investment plans, developing project pipelines, and facilitating access to finance, thereby contributing to the global environmental agenda and sustainable development goals.
Responsibilities
Support the daily implementation of NDC Act & Invest and PAF activities in target African countries. Ensure timely delivery of workplans and documentation. Maintain coordination efforts with internal and external partners, including UNEP, UNEP-CCC, national focal points, and implementing partners. Facilitate stakeholder events and consultations. Submit monthly progress and risk updates according to UNEP and NDC Partnership requirements. Lead and manage specific PAF projects, such as those in Namibia and Liberia, including planning, workplan tracking, stakeholder coordination, deliverable review, and reporting to UNEP and partners. Assist with coordination, documentation, and delivery of NDC stocktakes and support the revision process for NDCs 3.0, ensuring alignment with project timelines and quality standards.
Work Experience
Requires at least 5-6 years of professional experience in climate finance, sustainable development, environmental projects, or working with developing countries. Experience with international organizations is an asset. Specific experience in institutional assessment, capacity building for climate finance and private sector engagement, and policy development/implementation for NDCs, LT-LEDS, and sectoral strategies is required.
Skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Strong analytical and report-writing skills. Proven organizational and project management skills. Ability to plan strategically and coordinate technical activities under tight deadlines. Proficiency in standard office and communication software (MS Office, email, virtual meeting tools).
