Organizational Context
The UN Secretariat's reform aims to enhance the effectiveness of the UN Development System in achieving the 2030 Agenda and SDGs. UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCOs), led by empowered UN Resident Coordinators, support countries in reaching their development priorities. This Associate Communications Officer role is situated within the UN RCO in Male, Maldives, reporting to the Head of the RCO.
Job Purpose
The Associate Communications Officer plays a crucial role in supporting the UN Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in Maldives. This position contributes to gathering insights from media monitoring, implementing communications strategies to raise awareness and engagement, and drafting compelling narratives about the UN's work. The role involves fostering relationships with media, developing communication materials, and supporting outreach and advocacy campaigns to advance UN priorities. Additionally, the officer will assist in creating content for various platforms, including radio and podcasts, and contribute to the development of communications policies and training. The purpose is to enhance the UN's visibility and impact at the country level through effective strategic communications.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include monitoring traditional, social, and digital media to inform communications strategy and identify reputational risks. The role involves implementing communications strategies to drive engagement and support UN objectives, and drafting narratives and messaging for diverse audiences across various platforms. This includes media mapping, building relationships with media outlets, and developing media lines, especially for crisis situations. The officer will coordinate press conferences and media events, create compelling content, and produce communications products like press releases and reports. Developing and implementing communications campaigns, fostering strategic partnerships, and delivering outreach and advocacy strategies are also core duties. The role further encompasses creating content for radio and podcasts, contributing to communications policy and training, and preparing reports on communications activities and data analysis.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressive experience in developing and implementing communications strategies is required. Demonstrated knowledge of strategic communications principles and practices is essential. Experience in drafting messages for diverse audiences, developing creative content, understanding digital media platforms, and conducting data collection and analysis are desirable.
