Consultant Preparation of two chapters for ESCWA report ‘Making Sense of the Poverty and Inequality Puzzle in Arab Countries’

Organizational Context

The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), part of the UN Secretariat, is focused on supporting its member states in designing policies to alleviate poverty. This role contributes to a report analyzing poverty and inequality trends in Arab countries, building on previous ESCWA research and addressing emerging challenges.

Job Purpose

This consultancy aims to resolve the 'Arab Inequality Puzzle' by analyzing recent data on poverty, inequality, and the middle class. The consultant will produce two key chapters for the "Making Sense of the Poverty and Inequality Puzzle in Arab Countries" report. This involves developing methodologies, generating new results, and interpreting findings to provide policy implications for Arab nations, complementing existing ESCWA databases and tools.

Responsibilities

The consultant will collect, synthesize, and analyze data on socioeconomic vulnerabilities and poverty trends in Arab countries. Key duties include drafting the "Size of the middle class: trends and updates" chapter and the "Living conditions of the middle class" chapter, which will incorporate a section on "Trends in inequality perceptions." The consultant will also assist with other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor, contributing to the overall objectives of the report.

Work Experience

A minimum of 1 year of professional experience is required in conducting quantitative data analysis using statistical software, economic data analysis, presentation, drafting, and data visualization.
