UN Secretariat
Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia
Cloud Systems and DevOps Analyst
Organizational Context
The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), part of the UN Secretariat, operates within Western Asia and North Africa. This role is within the Decision-Support and Data Science Division (DSDSD), which drives modernization and innovation through advanced analytics and secure digital platforms. DSDS supports ESCWA, other UN entities, and Member States, aligning with the UN 2.0 agenda and focusing on operational resilience.
Job Purpose
This role supports the implementation, automation, secure hosting, and optimization of core cloud systems and scalable technology environments within ESCWA's Decision-Support and Data Science Division. The primary objective is to ensure high availability, security, and performance for critical digital assets, leveraging cutting-edge hybrid infrastructure and cloud technologies. The position contributes to ESCWA's modernization efforts by managing enterprise cloud environments, automating infrastructure, optimizing CI/CD processes, and migrating legacy systems to advanced public cloud ecosystems. This ensures reliable, enterprise-grade digital decision-support tools that empower evidence-based decision-making and enhance organizational efficiency across the region, aligning with the UN 2.0 agenda.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include deploying, managing, and optimizing enterprise-scale cloud resources in Microsoft Azure, ensuring performance, governance, and utilization. This involves administering hybrid virtualization architectures and transitioning virtual machines from on-premises Proxmox to Azure landing zones, while maintaining Windows Server and Linux operating systems. The role requires designing, building, and maintaining automated CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps for rapid software delivery. Additionally, it involves authoring and maintaining infrastructure as code (IaC) using Terraform, Bicep, and ARM Templates, and developing automated operational scripts with PowerShell. Collaboration with development teams to audit applications, gather requirements for Azure deployments, and analyze on-premises application architectures for optimal cloud migration is essential. The role also encompasses managing cloud security, identity, and monitoring through Azure Active Directory and Azure Monitor, implementing infrastructure hardening, and ensuring operational best practices.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in system administration, IT infrastructure operations, or cloud platforms architecture is required. Demonstrated hands-on experience with production cloud environments in Microsoft Azure, building automated CI/CD pipelines, and using Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, Bicep, ARM Templates) is essential. Experience collaborating with development teams on application modernization and migrations from on-premises hypervisors (Proxmox, VMware) to Azure is highly desirable.
