Organizational Context
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) seeks an International Consultant specializing in minerals crime and supply chain security. This role supports the implementation of UNODC's Diagnostic Tool on minerals crime, strengthens engagement with public and private stakeholders in the minerals sector, and aids in developing strategies to combat minerals crime.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to support UNODC's mission to promote transparent and sustainable mineral supply chains by addressing risks and vulnerabilities. The consultant will implement a Diagnostic Tool to assess national crime prevention and criminal justice responses to minerals crime, offering tailored recommendations. The role involves in-depth research, stakeholder engagement, adapting the tool to country-specific contexts, and leading its implementation. The ultimate goal is to strengthen ESG standards and enhance the prevention, investigation, and prosecution of minerals crime, laying the groundwork for future UNODC engagement with Member States.
Responsibilities
Conduct in-depth research on the geopolitical, social, economic, and legal context of target countries, focusing on the mining industry. Support the planning, organization, and coordination of the UNODC Diagnostic Tool implementation process. Adapt the Diagnostic Tool to regional and country-specific contexts, identifying key stakeholders and promoting partnerships. Lead the implementation phase, including organizing meetings, collecting and analyzing information, and preparing documentation. Provide substantive input to the Diagnostic Tool and lead advocacy and awareness-raising initiatives. Represent the minerals portfolio in dialogues with partners and donors, reporting on progress, challenges, and opportunities. Monitor and report on key activities to ensure project alignment and effectiveness.
Work Experience
A minimum of 7 years of progressive professional experience in research, analysis, program support, project implementation, or technical assistance related to crime prevention, criminal justice, governance, natural resources, environmental crime, or the minerals sector is required. At least 3 years must involve program implementation, including policy document/guideline development. Previous field experience with national institutions, academia, civil society, or the private sector is required.
