UN Secretariat
United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction
Consultant to support the numerical modelling for RAR27 at country level
Organizational Context
The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the UN system's focal point for coordinating disaster reduction efforts. It guides, monitors, and reports on the Sendai Framework, supporting regional and national implementation. The Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean (ROAC) produces Regional Assessment Reports (RARs) to analyze disaster risk and financing.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to support the development of a regional probabilistic model for multiple hazards, including wildfires, considering future climate, exposure, and vulnerability. The role will contribute to the next Regional Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction (RAR27) for the Americas and the Caribbean. This report will quantify the cost of inaction by reviewing the Sendai Framework's implementation and multi-hazard risk estimates, proposing methodologies to assess the cost of not making decisions, and emphasizing the urgency for financing sustainable development through disaster risk reduction (DRR).
Responsibilities
The primary responsibility is to support the development of a regional probabilistic model for multiple hazards, specifically including wildfires, and to account for future climate, exposure, and vulnerability conditions. This involves contributing to the next Regional Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction (RAR27) for the Americas and the Caribbean. The role will assist in quantifying the cost of inaction at regional, national, and local levels by reviewing the progress of the Sendai Framework implementation and analyzing the latest regional multi-hazard risk estimates. Additionally, the consultant will propose methodologies and approaches to assess the cost of not making decisions, thereby highlighting the urgency for financing sustainable development through DRR.
Work Experience
At least fifteen years of experience in disaster risk reduction and the development of regional or global reports is required. Experience in probabilistic multi-hazard risk modelling, including wildfires, is essential. Experience engaging with expert technical stakeholders and peer-reviewers is desirable, as is experience with a UN, government, or international organization working on probabilistic risk metrics.
