Organizational Context
The United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) in Mogadishu seeks a Fire Safety Officer. This role operates under the oversight of the Principal Security Adviser and the Chief Security Officer, reporting to the Head of the Fire Safety Unit. Job Purpose
The Fire Safety Officer is responsible for managing all fire safety operations within UNSOS, ensuring the safety and security of personnel, facilities, and assets. This includes coordinating emergency response, maintaining compliance with international fire safety standards, and supervising the Fire Safety Unit. The role involves developing and updating fire safety plans, conducting regular risk assessments and inspections, and overseeing fire safety activities across facilities. A key aspect is ensuring the readiness of a 24/7 Fire Service to respond effectively to various emergencies, including fires, accidents, and HAZMAT spills, thereby contributing to a secure operational environment.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include assisting the Head of Fire Safety Unit in overall unit management and supervision. The role requires liaising with host government fire and emergency services, and ensuring the effective operation of a 24/7 Fire Service for incident response. This involves drafting and updating Fire Safety and Emergency Evacuation Plans, coordinating drills and training, and supervising facility-specific fire safety activities. The officer will conduct regular fire risk assessments, inspections, and technical evaluations of fire detection systems, reporting findings and recommending corrective actions. Additionally, responsibilities include assisting in the specification and maintenance of fire safety equipment, planning static installations, and maintaining a functional Fire Warden System.
Work Experience
A minimum of eight years of progressive experience in a public fire service is required, with at least five years in a fire safety supervisory role. Experience in managing fire safety operations, coordinating emergency response, and conducting risk assessments is essential.
