Organizational Context
This full-time, unpaid internship is within the Security Sector Reform Unit (SSRU) of the Peacebuilding and Peace Support Office (PBPSO), part of the UN Secretariat's Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO). The intern will report to the Deputy SSRU in New York and can work remotely, hybrid, or in-office.
Job Purpose
The Communication Intern will support the Security Sector Reform Unit (SSRU) in its communication efforts. This includes preparing weekly media briefings, drafting communication materials for various platforms like X and LinkedIn, and assisting with the development and maintenance of the SSRU website. The role also involves supporting the annual SSR Week campaign, developing promotional videos, organizing communication assets, and providing logistical and administrative assistance for SSRU events. Additionally, the intern will contribute to research, including the development of the SSRU's generative AI tool, SALMA, and perform other related duties as required to enhance the unit's outreach and impact.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include preparing a weekly SSR Media Briefing for a global audience, assisting in drafting communications for platforms such as X and LinkedIn, and supporting the development and maintenance of the SSRU website by coordinating and publishing approved content. The intern will also contribute to the implementation of the annual SSR Week communication campaign, develop short promotional videos on security sector reform, and organize photo banks, mailing lists, and archival content. Further duties involve providing communications, logistical, and administrative support for SSRU events, and assisting with research, including the development of the SSRU's generative AI tool (SALMA).
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a relevant field of study is essential. Applicants must be students in the final year of a bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D. program, or have completed such a program.
