Environment Affairs Intern: Environment and development - Nature based climate solutions
Organizational Context
The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is the primary intergovernmental platform in the Asia-Pacific region, fostering cooperation among 53 member states and 9 associate members to address sustainable development challenges. The secretariat supports inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development through knowledge generation, technical assistance, and capacity-building, aligning with national objectives and the 2030 Agenda. This role is within the Environment and Development Policy Section of the Environment and Development Division.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to support the Environment and Development Policy Section in its mission to facilitate the analysis, development, promotion, and dissemination of innovative environmental and development policies across the Asia-Pacific region. The role will contribute to addressing critical environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, which hinder progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. The intern will assist in shaping policy advocacy and supporting decision-making processes by developing knowledge products, policy briefs, and other tools. This opportunity is crucial for advancing climate policy, accelerating the ambition of national climate pledges, and supporting a transition towards equitable, low-carbon, and climate-resilient development pathways in the region.
Responsibilities
The intern will support the Environment and Development Policy Section in its work on environment and development policies, with a focus on climate change, nature-based solutions, and sustainable resource management. Key duties include conducting research and data analysis for knowledge products, developing visual materials such as infographics and presentations, and assisting in the creation of policy briefs and outreach materials. The intern will also support the development of draft agendas and background documents for conferences and events. Additionally, responsibilities include assisting with the organization of webinars, online courses, subregional, and regional consultations, and climate awareness initiatives related to the SDG Help Desk. The role involves contributing to frameworks and platforms for inter-country cooperation and supporting countries in policy formulation.
Work Experience
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a relevant field of study is necessary. Desirable experience includes skills in developing infographics, posters, and publications, as well as video development. The ability to draft news articles, social media posts, and design surveys/polls is also considered an asset.
Skills
Proficiency in standard software applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Teams). Desirable: Design software skills for infographics, posters, publications; video development skills. Excellent communication (speaking and writing) in English. Desirable: Ability to draft news articles/social media posts; ability to design surveys/polls. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
