Organizational Context

The Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (Mechanism) is an entity within the UN Secretariat. This role supports the Mechanism's mandate by providing essential language services, including interpretation and translation, to facilitate its investigations and communications. The position operates remotely.

Job Purpose

The Language Specialist will provide critical interpretation and translation services to support the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar's mandate. This involves ensuring accurate and timely communication between Mechanism personnel, witnesses, and other interlocutors in various languages. The role contributes to the integrity and effectiveness of the Mechanism's investigative and reporting functions by facilitating the understanding and processing of evidentiary materials and communications. The specialist will also assist in refining AI-generated translations and ensuring consistency in language services, maintaining professional composure when handling sensitive information.

Responsibilities

Provide interpretation services between Myanmar languages and English for Mechanism personnel, witnesses, and other stakeholders. Translate documents and communications from Myanmar languages to English and vice versa, adhering to established guidelines. Transcribe and translate audio/video materials from Myanmar languages into English. Record and store translated materials in the evidence repository. Train and correct AI-generated translations. Consult with colleagues on language issues to ensure consistency. Assist in reviewing and preparing English summaries of evidentiary materials. Perform other related tasks, maintaining accuracy and impartiality when handling sensitive or distressing information.

Work Experience

A minimum of three years of experience in translating and/or interpreting between Myanmar languages (Burmese) and English is required. Experience with legal or criminal investigative documents is desirable, as is experience within international courts or accountability mechanisms.
