Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority, setting the environmental agenda and promoting sustainable development within the UN system. The Ecosystems Division focuses on ecosystem-based solutions and strengthening the One Health approach. This role is within the Nature and Health Unit in Nairobi, supporting UNEP's One Health initiatives.
Job Purpose
This Programme Management Officer role supports UNEP's work on the One Health approach, aiming to integrate environmental factors into proactive prevention of health crises and coordinated action on human, animal, and ecosystem health. The incumbent will participate in program development, implementation, and evaluation, monitor project progress, conduct research, assist in policy development, and prepare various written outputs. The role involves supporting consultative meetings, conducting outreach activities, leading field missions, and coordinating budget and funding activities. Additionally, the position requires collecting and analyzing data to provide insights for planning and decision-making, utilizing data visualization methods.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include participating in the development, implementation, and evaluation of assigned programmes and projects, monitoring progress, and proposing corrective actions. The role involves conducting research, analyzing information from diverse sources, and assisting in policy development. Responsibilities extend to designing data collection tools, analyzing survey responses, and preparing written outputs such as background papers and reports. The incumbent will provide substantive support for meetings and conferences, conduct training workshops, and lead field missions. Coordination of budget and funding activities, including preparation of financial statements and reports, is also required. A significant aspect involves collecting and analyzing data to identify trends and provide insights for data-driven planning and decision-making.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive experience in project or programme management related to One Health, biodiversity, climate, or pollution linked to health is required. This includes at least two years of experience in developing countries and two years working within international organizations like the UN. Experience in international interagency initiatives involving health and environment sectors, and two years in data analytics, are desirable.
