Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), is implementing the Nature for Health (N4H) scoping phase in the Pacific region. This initiative aims to reduce pandemic and related health risks by strengthening environmental aspects of One Health. The role sits within UNEP Asia and the Pacific Office, reporting to the Regional Sub-programme Coordinator for Nature Action.
Job Purpose
This consultancy supports the successful implementation and completion of the N4H Pacific scoping phase, culminating in a detailed Implementation Project Document. The role focuses on conducting systemic inquiry to understand the interconnections between environmental degradation and health risks in the Pacific. It involves analyzing existing initiatives, mapping gaps, engaging stakeholders, and developing strategies to strengthen the environmental dimensions of One Health. The ultimate goal is to reduce the risk of zoonotic and vector-borne diseases by addressing environmental drivers like habitat destruction and climate change, thereby contributing to improved public health and ecosystem resilience in the region.
Responsibilities
Conduct rapid baseline analyses on existing initiatives and investments related to One Health, pandemic prevention, and the biodiversity-climate-health nexus in the Pacific. Identify key environmental drivers contributing to zoonotic spillover risk and other health risks. Perform stakeholder analysis and develop a comprehensive stakeholder engagement plan for the Pacific N4H initiative. Plan and facilitate a co-creation scoping workshop, alongside bilateral meetings and consultations with Pacific Island Countries and relevant stakeholders, utilizing a systems thinking approach. Lead the development of a detailed Implementation Project Document for the Pacific N4H, outlining strategies for reducing health risks through environmental interventions.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience is required, with demonstrated engagement in at least two of the following fields: One Health, systems thinking, ecosystem health, environment and biodiversity, wildlife management, emerging infectious diseases and zoonoses, public health, or animal health. Experience in the Pacific Region and with regional bodies is desirable.
