The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the UN agency for urbanization, promoting sustainable and resilient cities. The Planning, Finance Section (PFS) supports countries with urban planning methods. This role, based in Nairobi, Kenya, will collaborate with the Urban Lab and PFS on projects in Nigeria and Kenya.
Job Purpose
This role is to provide essential planning and design outputs to support UN-Habitat's technical assistance initiatives in Nigeria and Kenya. The incumbent will contribute to the development of urban planning methods and systems, addressing urbanization challenges and promoting sustainable urban expansion. The position involves close collaboration with the Urban Lab team and the Planning, Finance Section, reporting to a Programme Management Officer, and directly supporting the implementation of Eco City masterplan activities. The goal is to deliver high-quality planning materials and strategic visions for the designated regions.
Responsibilities
The Urban Planner will be responsible for preparing comprehensive planning and design materials, including presentations, maps, and drawings, for workshops engaging city and county officials and technical staff in Nigeria and Kenya. This includes the drafting, revision, and finalization of planning documents crucial for spatial analysis and the development of strategic visions. The role may also involve participation in technical missions as required. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Project Manager from the Planning Finance Section, ensuring alignment with project objectives and UN-Habitat's mandate.
Work Experience
A minimum of 2 years of proven experience in creating graphical planning materials using computer-aided design tools is essential. Experience with data management and processing using GIS software is also required. Good hand-drawing skills for macro-scale plans and strong analytical and design skills in regional and citywide planning are advantageous. Prior working experience in Africa is considered a plus.
