Organizational Context
The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) aims to deliver ideas and actions for an empowered and transformed Africa, guided by the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063. The Macroeconomics, Finance, Governance and Planning Division (MFGPD) supports African Member States in accelerating economic transformation and inclusive growth. This role is within the Macroeconomic Analysis, Institutions & Economic Governance Section (MIGS) of the MFGPD.
Job Purpose
The Economic Affairs Officer will contribute to the Division's analytical, normative, and operational work by conducting policy research, providing technical advisory services, developing capacity, and supporting regional intergovernmental processes. The role involves monitoring economic developments, conducting in-depth studies on macroeconomic analysis, economic governance, and development finance, and interpreting econometric modeling results. The incumbent will develop policy recommendations, formulate development strategies, and prepare inputs for senior staff presentations. Additionally, the role provides substantive support to intergovernmental bodies, represents the organization at meetings, and designs and monitors technical cooperation projects, including missions to member states and training workshops for government officials. The officer will also analyze and visualize data to support planning and decision-making.
Responsibilities
The Economic Affairs Officer will monitor economic developments and identify emerging issues. Key duties include designing and conducting studies on macroeconomic analysis, economic governance, and development finance, drafting reports, and interpreting econometric modeling results. The role involves developing policy recommendations and formulating proposals for development strategies for intergovernmental bodies. The officer will attend and represent the organization at international, regional, and national meetings, and organize expert group meetings. Substantive support will be provided to intergovernmental bodies on economic issues. Furthermore, the role includes designing and monitoring technical cooperation projects, undertaking missions to member states, and conducting training seminars. The officer will also support junior staff, participate in inter-departmental initiatives, and perform administrative tasks. Data analysis and visualization for planning and reporting are also key responsibilities.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in economic research, analysis, policy formulation, or application of economic principles in development programs is required. Experience in macroeconomic analysis or economic governance in developing countries is desirable. A proven record of academic publications and policy-oriented papers is also desirable, as is 2+ years of experience in data analytics.
