Junior Analyst - Sustainable Public Finance
Organizational Context
The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the UN's designated entity for global environmental issues. Its Industry and Economy Division collaborates with governments and organizations to implement policies for efficient resource use and pollution reduction. The Economics and Fiscal Policy Unit (EFPU) specifically supports Ministries of Finance in aligning fiscal frameworks with sustainable and inclusive growth objectives.
Job Purpose
This role supports UNEP's Finance and Economic Transformation sub-programme by contributing to substantive analytical and research workstreams. The Junior Analyst will gather, interpret, and synthesize policy and country evidence into usable analytical products. The primary purpose is to assist in developing a guide update by conducting research, analyzing case studies, and drafting content, ultimately helping Ministries of Finance align fiscal and economic policies with durable growth, competitiveness, resilience, and climate action.
Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive desk research and literature reviews on new thematic areas for a guide update. Identify, compile, and analyze country case studies from Ministries of Finance, mapping them against the guide's framework. Draft annotated content, boxes, figures, and evidence summaries for guide sections, ensuring clarity and professional standards. Synthesize technical inputs from partners and member Ministries into structured analytical summaries. Prepare background analysis and analytical briefing inputs for management ahead of key engagements and meetings.
Work Experience
A minimum of one to two years of relevant professional experience in economic, fiscal, climate, or sustainable finance policy research and analysis is required. Experience working with international organizations or development partners is desirable. Familiarity with public finance and fiscal policy concepts is necessary.
Skills
Strong analytical and writing skills. Ability to conduct desk research and literature reviews. Skill in synthesizing technical and policy material into clear, well-structured written outputs. Familiarity with public finance, fiscal policy, climate finance, or sustainable finance concepts. Experience with UN or similar organizations is a plus.
