Study - Conservation priorities for sharks and rays in Oceania

Organizational Context

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) supports the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS) Secretariat, which administers various intergovernmental agreements. This consultancy operates under the Sharks Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), an international agreement focused on maintaining the conservation status of migratory sharks and rays.

Job Purpose

This consultancy aims to develop a comprehensive prioritization of conservation activities for shark and ray species listed in Annex 1 of the Sharks MOU within the Oceania region. The ultimate goal is to provide actionable, science-based recommendations to Oceania Signatories, guiding them in implementing effective conservation actions aligned with the existing Conservation Plan and Programme of Work. The results will inform and direct conservation efforts for these vulnerable species in the region, ensuring their sustainable management and favorable conservation status.

Responsibilities

The consultant will develop an inception report detailing project steps, timelines, and risks. They will apply a specified methodology and prioritization matrix to identify priority species and conservation actions for sharks and rays in the Oceania region, potentially subdividing it into subregions. Assessments of species vulnerability and risk may be conducted where data permits. A draft consultation report will be prepared, followed by engagement with stakeholders for feedback. Finally, the consultant will consolidate comments to produce a final report with clear recommendations for priority actions, ensuring they address all aspects of the Sharks MOU Conservation Plan and suggest improvements for future exercises.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressive professional experience in conservation planning, project management, and international conservation policy is required. This must include substantial experience with shark and ray conservation, assessing their needs, and formulating regional conservation measures. Knowledge of conservation priorities in the Oceania region is also necessary.
