Public Information Intern
Organizational Context
The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Beirut, part of the Department of Global Communications, aims to inform the public about the UN system and promote understanding of its activities. This internship is located within the Information Centres Service (ICS) and offers a duration of three to six months. The role is unpaid and can be full-time or part-time, with potential for flexible or remote work arrangements.
Job Purpose
This internship at the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Beirut, within the Department of Global Communications, supports the UN's mission to disseminate information globally and foster public understanding of its work. The intern will assist in various communication tasks, contributing to the UNIC's outreach efforts to media, educational institutions, and civil society. The role is designed to provide practical experience in public information dissemination, content creation, and event support, helping to share the United Nations story effectively with diverse audiences in their own languages. This position is crucial for enhancing the UN's visibility and engagement within the region.
Responsibilities
The intern will assist in drafting various communication materials in English and Arabic, including media advisories, press releases, and news stories. Responsibilities include contributing content for the UNIC Beirut website and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) with relevant UN news and events. The role involves providing media support for events and campaigns organized by UNIC Beirut, and assisting in the organization of press conferences, meetings, and briefings. Additionally, the intern will help with photography and videography for media coverage and archiving, and undertake other ad-hoc activities as instructed by supervisors.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a strong academic background in a relevant field is necessary. Applicants must demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals. Experience interacting with diverse cultural backgrounds is also beneficial.
Skills
Proficiency in standard software applications (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams). Ability to draft news articles and social media posts is desirable. Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Keen interest in the UN's work and ideals. Ability to interact with diverse cultural backgrounds.
