Consultant - Development of technical materials for an integrated system of population and social statistics
Organizational Context
The UN Secretariat, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, is developing a Central Framework for a System of Population and Social Statistics (CF-SPSS). This initiative aims to create a unified conceptual and statistical framework to organize, produce, and use population and social statistics coherently. The role supports the Committee of Experts on Population and Social Statistics (CEPSS) in advancing this crucial work.
Job Purpose
This consultancy provides specialized technical support to advance the development of the Central Framework for a System of Population and Social Statistics (CF-SPSS). The role is critical in establishing the conceptual foundation and common statistical terminology for the framework. It will contribute to revising the Classification of Statistical Activities, developing integrated tabulations, and systematizing country practices. The ultimate goal is to translate the CF-SPSS from a proof of concept into an operational framework, addressing fragmented data and enhancing policy-relevant evidence for global agendas like the SDGs.
Responsibilities
The consultant will provide technical support for the CF-SPSS development, focusing on reviewing the Classification of Statistical Activities and developing a glossary with common statistical language. Key duties include preparing an initial structure for population groups and developing initial integrated tabulations. The role involves systematizing relevant country practices and preparing technical inputs and working materials for the Task Team. This includes synthesizing existing materials, supporting the development of common statistical language, revising classifications, and assessing data availability for population groups and tabulations.
Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in official statistics or related fields, specifically in drafting analytical reports or methodological documents, is required. Experience in population and/or social statistics is essential. Experience with statistical frameworks, classifications, concepts, definitions, tabulations, or integrated data approaches is highly desirable.
Skills
Expertise in statistics, demography, sociology, or economics. Experience in official statistics, analytical reporting, and methodological document development. Proficiency in population and/or social statistics. Familiarity with statistical frameworks, classifications, concepts, definitions, tabulations, and integrated data approaches. Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
