Organizational Context
The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is seeking a Research Intern to contribute to its research initiatives. This remote, full-time internship focuses on UNICRI's work concerning cyber and new technologies, specifically the malicious use of emerging technologies like satellite-enabled systems within digital critical infrastructure.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to support UNICRI's analytical and policy-oriented research on the evolving landscape of cyber-enabled crime and the misuse of emerging technologies. The intern will contribute to understanding the links between cyber-enabled crime, organized criminal networks, and terrorist use of digital and satellite communications. The role involves in-depth research into the malicious applications of technologies such as satellite-enabled systems, digital communications, and other emerging technologies, contributing to policy development and risk assessment in the field of responsible technology governance and emerging threat landscapes.
Responsibilities
Conduct desk research on the malicious use of emerging technologies by criminal and terrorist actors, focusing on cyber-enabled threats and digital communications. Research the misuse of satellite-enabled technologies, including communication devices, internet services, and geospatial technologies. Support research on emerging technologies as components of digital critical infrastructure. Collect, organize, and analyze open-source information, academic literature, and technical reports. Assist in drafting research papers, briefing notes, and analytical reports. Identify emerging trends, risks, and areas of interest related to cyber and new technologies. Support research dissemination and communication activities. Provide general research and program support as needed.
Work Experience
No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, applicants should possess good knowledge of standard software applications, including MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. The ability to draft news articles or social media posts, and design surveys/polls, is considered desirable.
