The World Environment Situation Room (WESR) is a key platform for environmental data and applications.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to advance the digital development of UNEP's World Environment Situation Room (WESR) tools, specifically the Environmental Data Capacity (EDC) Toolkit and the WESR Knowledge Hub. The role will focus on developing, testing, and integrating core digital components, including the GEDS Assessment Tool and Capacity Pathways modules, ensuring their operational readiness for pilot implementation and broader rollout. The consultant will contribute to the front-end and back-end development of WESR applications, support testing and troubleshooting, and produce technical documentation. This work is crucial for supporting the timely implementation of UNEP's Global Environmental Data Strategy (GEDS) and enhancing UNEP's capacity as a data-driven organization.
Responsibilities
Develop, test, and transition core digital components of the EDC Toolkit, including the GEDS Assessment Tool (backend and frontend) and Capacity Pathways modules, to the WESR Knowledge Hub. Integrate the GEDS Toolkit with containerized React UI WebApp and resources via CKAN API. Provide advisory and technical development support for WESR infrastructure as needed. Support the design, development, and deployment of WESR use cases and digital EDC Toolkit modules. Contribute to front-end and back-end development of WESR tools and applications, including content modules, navigation, and user interface components. Support testing, troubleshooting, and iterative refinement of digital tools based on user feedback. Produce technical documentation and conduct knowledge transfer sessions to ensure internal maintenance and continuity beyond the consultancy period.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of experience in database development and archiving, and software systems analysis, design, and development is required. Experience in complex web application projects, developing workflow automation, and service request tracking solutions is also required. Experience with UN agencies or international organizations is desirable.
