The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Geneva is a multilateral platform promoting economic integration and cooperation. Job Purpose
This internship within the UNECE Water and Industrial Safety Section offers a valuable opportunity to contribute to the work of the secretariat of the Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents. The intern will gain practical experience in supporting international environmental policy and cooperation. The role involves assisting in the organization of key meetings, conducting research on critical environmental and industrial safety topics, and contributing to capacity-building activities. This position is designed to provide hands-on experience in international environmental governance, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development initiatives, fostering a deeper understanding of the UN's role in addressing global environmental challenges.
Responsibilities
Support the organization and preparation of the Convention's Conference of the Parties and related seminars. Prepare draft presentations, reports, and project proposals on industrial accident prevention, preparedness, and response, including emerging risks. Conduct research and provide analytical input on environmental and industrial safety topics such as land-use planning, accidental water pollution, mine tailings safety, energy transition risks, and Natech events. Assist in preparing for meetings of subsidiary bodies and facilitate expert exchanges. Contribute to capacity-building activities and projects under the Convention's Assistance and Cooperation Programme. Identify and support linkages between the Industrial Accidents Convention, SDGs, and the Sendai Framework. Update and develop content for the Convention's web page and prepare communication materials. Assist in drafting and reviewing press releases, meeting minutes, and publications.

No professional work experience is required for participation in the UN Internship Programme. However, applicants must demonstrate an ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
