Organizational Context
This position is within the News & Media Division of the Department of Global Communications (DGC) at the UN Secretariat. The role supports the Hindi Project, which aims to expand multilingual communications and strengthen outreach to Hindi-speaking audiences. The Communications Assistant reports to a Chief of Section or Senior Programme Officer.
Job Purpose
The Communications Assistant provides crucial administrative and logistical support for communication campaigns, outreach activities, meetings, and multimedia projects. This includes drafting and finalizing correspondence, managing records, and organizing meetings. The role also involves coordinating administrative services for the Hindi Language Project, such as processing requisitions and travel authorizations. A key function is assisting officers in producing and disseminating communication materials, including news stories, web content, and social media posts, ensuring adherence to UN editorial standards. The assistant will update and maintain Hindi-language digital platforms and support the timely publication of content, contributing to the expansion of multilingual communications and outreach to Hindi-speaking audiences.
Responsibilities
Provide administrative and logistical support for communication campaigns, outreach activities, meetings, events, and multimedia projects, including correspondence management and record-keeping. Coordinate administrative services for the Hindi Language Project, processing requisitions, service contracts, and travel authorizations. Assist in the production and dissemination of communication materials (news stories, web content, social media posts), ensuring adherence to UN standards. Manage and update internal databases, information systems, and Hindi-language digital platforms, supporting timely content publication. Support the translation, language adaptation, and versioning of communication materials into Hindi. Research and compile information for news stories and communication products targeting Hindi-speaking audiences. Monitor media coverage and social media trends, preparing summaries and reports. Participate in planning and coordinating daily communication activities with other UN News language teams. Create designs for promotional materials using relevant software, ensuring UN standards are met. Assist in collecting audience engagement statistics for reporting and evaluation. Prepare and update web pages, incorporating graphics and ensuring browser compatibility. Provide guidance to junior staff and perform other assigned duties.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of experience in public information, journalism, public relations, or related fields is required. This is reduced to three years for candidates with a first-level university degree. Experience in digital content, social media support, media monitoring, research, supporting communication campaigns, or working within the UN system is desirable.
