PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER
Organizational Context
This position is within the News & Media Division of the Department of Global Communications (DGC) in New York. The role supports the expansion of multilingual communications and strengthens outreach to Hindi-speaking audiences through the Hindi Project, reporting to a Chief of Section or Senior Programme Officer.
Job Purpose
The Public Information Officer is responsible for implementing information programs to publicize UN priorities and events, with a focus on promoting multilingual initiatives like the Hindi Language Project. This involves developing information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring progress, and analyzing outcomes. The role also entails analyzing current events and public opinion on Hindi and multilingual platforms, advising management on responses, and undertaking activities to promote media coverage of UN content in Hindi. This includes developing media strategies, arranging press conferences, and disseminating information to enhance the visibility of UN Hindi-language content.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include implementing information programs to publicize UN priorities and events, promoting multilingual initiatives like the Hindi Language Project, and analyzing outcomes. The role involves monitoring and analyzing current events, public opinion, and media trends on Hindi and multilingual platforms, advising management on appropriate responses. It also includes promoting media coverage through press conferences and outreach, developing media strategies, and disseminating materials to enhance the visibility of Hindi-language UN content. The officer will produce or oversee the production of various communication products in Hindi, prepare articles for UN publications, and maintain professional relationships with stakeholders to support multilingual communication. Additionally, the role involves acting as a focal point for Hindi-language communication projects and providing editorial guidance and supervision to junior staff.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive experience in public information, journalism, international relations, or public administration is required. Essential experience includes audio/video production, digital media editing, publishing, social media, stakeholder coordination, and staff supervision. Desirable experience includes risk management, monitoring and evaluation, and work within the UN system or similar large organizations.
Skills
Professionalism in communications, campaign management, media operations, marketing, audience outreach, and message targeting. Ability to analyze information, identify issues, handle sensitive situations, and produce clear written and oral communications. Strong communication skills, including effective speaking, writing, listening, and tailoring messages to audiences. Teamwork capabilities, including collaboration, valuing diverse input, and supporting group decisions.
