Organizational Context
This position is within the News & Media Division of the Department of Global Communications (DGC) in New York. The role supports the Hindi Project, which aims to expand multilingual communications and strengthen outreach to Hindi-speaking audiences. The Communications Assistant reports to a Chief of Section or Senior Programme Officer.
Job Purpose
The Communications Assistant provides essential administrative and logistical support for communication campaigns, outreach activities, meetings, and multimedia projects. This includes managing correspondence, maintaining records, and coordinating administrative services for the Hindi Language Project. The role assists in producing and disseminating information products like news stories, web content, and social media posts, ensuring adherence to UN editorial standards. It also involves updating Hindi-language digital platforms, supporting content publication, and assisting with the translation and adaptation of materials into Hindi. The position contributes to effective communication strategies targeting Hindi-speaking audiences and supports the overall goals of the Department of Global Communications.
Responsibilities
Provide administrative and logistical support for communication campaigns, outreach, meetings, events, and multimedia projects. Process, draft, and finalize correspondence; maintain files, schedules, and documentation; organize meetings and monitor deadlines. Coordinate administrative services, including requisitions, service contracts, and travel authorizations for the Hindi Language Project. Assist in drafting, editing, formatting, and disseminating communication materials such as news stories, articles, web content, newsletters, and social media posts, adhering to UN standards. Manage and update internal databases, information systems, and editorial calendars. Update Hindi-language digital platforms and support timely content publication. Support translation and language adaptation of materials into Hindi. Research and compile information for news stories and communication products for Hindi-speaking audiences. Monitor media coverage and social media trends related to UN priorities, preparing summaries. Design promotional materials using relevant software, ensuring compliance with UN standards. Assist in collecting audience engagement statistics. Prepare and update web pages, incorporating graphics and ensuring browser compatibility. Provide guidance to junior staff and perform other assigned duties.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of relevant experience in public communications, production, and dissemination of information products is required. This minimum is reduced to three years for candidates with a first-level university degree. Experience in digital content support, social media, media monitoring, research, and supporting communication campaigns is desirable.
