The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is seeking a Local Consultant to analyze illegal mining in the Brazilian Amazon. This role focuses on the use and control of cyanide and heavy machinery, examining existing initiatives, identifying gaps, and proposing solutions. The consultant will work closely with the UNODC project team and partners.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this consultancy is to conduct a comprehensive analytical review of illegal mining activities in the Brazilian Amazon, with a specific focus on cyanide use and the control of heavy machinery. The role involves developing scientific and technical reports, providing continuous technical input to UNODC projects (LEAP and Aurum), and supporting inter-institutional dialogues and awareness efforts. The consultant will contribute to preventing illegal cyanide use and developing proposals for controlling heavy machinery in illegal gold mining operations, ensuring alignment with UNODC standards and project objectives.
Responsibilities
Develop scientific and technical reports on cyanide use in mining and the control of heavy machinery in illegal gold mining. Conduct mapping and analytical reviews of existing projects and initiatives, identifying procedures, gaps, and best practices. Participate in meetings, dialogues, workshops, and focus groups with project teams and partners to exchange information and validate findings. Prepare analytical reports with appropriate methodologies, including regulatory reviews, data analysis, stakeholder consultations, and geospatial analysis where feasible. Revise and finalize all drafted materials based on feedback, ensuring consistency with project objectives and UNODC standards. Prepare a concise factsheet summarizing key findings and recommendations for outreach and awareness purposes.
Work Experience
At least two years of experience in research related to illegal mining and its supply chain. At least two years of proven experience in Data Science (SQL, R, Python), including data integration, cross-referencing, and Geoprocessing. Experience with UN system programs is desirable.
