Organizational Context
The UN Secretariat's Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) oversees the G20 Global Land Initiative (GLI) Coordination Office. This office focuses on capacity building, private sector and civil society engagement, and showcasing success in reducing land degradation and enhancing terrestrial habitats. The role supports the GLI's increased activities and resource mobilization efforts.
Job Purpose
This role serves to strengthen the strategic positioning, visibility, and public engagement of the G20 Global Land Initiative Coordination Office (ICO). The consultant will provide expert strategic communications, media advisory, and executive messaging support to enhance global awareness of the ICO's mandates concerning land degradation, restoration, drought resilience, and sustainable development. The purpose is to elevate the ICO's influence and public perception through coherent, high-quality, and impactful communication strategies, aligning with UNCCD and G20 priorities and major political moments.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement the ICO's communication strategy and plan, aligned with UNCCD and G20 priorities. Provide strategic communications advisory to leadership on institutional positioning, public messaging, and media engagement. Create strategic narratives and messaging frameworks for the ICO's mandates. Identify opportunities to enhance the ICO's global visibility and positioning. Support the positioning of the ICO and its leadership in high-level international discussions. Develop and manage communication and PR campaigns. Draft, edit, and coordinate high-level communications materials, including speeches, talking points, and media statements. Develop and implement social media content plans in Arabic. Engage with top-tier Arabic and international media, identifying visibility opportunities and preparing for engagements. Provide communications support for events and high-level engagements, including remote and on-site coverage. Monitor communications performance, media visibility, and audience engagement, providing strategic recommendations and reports.
Work Experience
Required experience includes developing strategic communication plans for large organizations and working with top-tier Arabic broadcast, print, and online media. Excellent writing and editing skills in Arabic are essential for creating media content. Experience in countries affected by desertification, land degradation, and drought is desirable.
