Organizational Context
The United Nations Support Office in Haiti (UNSOH) provides support to key Haitian entities and UN offices, including the Gang Suppression Force, BINUH, and Haitian National Police. The Air Operations Assistant role is situated within the Mission Air Operations Center, reporting to the Chief of MAOC, and supports the planning, monitoring, and coordination of air operations. The position is based in Port-au-Prince but may require assignments to other locations within Haiti.
Job Purpose
The Air Operations Assistant plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and safe execution of air transportation activities within UNSOH. This position supports the planning and coordination of various flight types, including routine passenger and cargo, special missions like medical evacuations and VIP transport, and military operations. The assistant is responsible for compiling and disseminating Air Tasking Orders (ATOs), monitoring flight movements, and updating tracking systems. Furthermore, the role involves participating in the coordination of search and rescue operations for UN air assets and other aircraft as needed. Maintaining accurate records of aircraft movements and operational statistics is also a key function, contributing to the overall effectiveness of air operations and support to the mission's mandate.
Responsibilities
The Air Operations Assistant is responsible for assisting in the planning and coordination of routine, special, and military operational flights. This includes compiling, publishing, and communicating daily Air Tasking Orders (ATOs) according to established procedures and deadlines. The role involves participating in the coordination of integrated search and rescue operations for UN air assets and other aircraft upon request. Key duties also include monitoring flight departures and arrivals, updating relevant tracking systems, and maintaining comprehensive records of aircraft movements and operational statistics. The assistant will perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor, Chief MAOC, or Chief Aviation.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in air transportation operations or related fields is required. This minimum is reduced to five years for candidates with a first-level university degree. Experience in flight planning, flight dispatch, or air operations is essential. Knowledge of aviation terminology and operational procedures, along with basic radio communication skills, is desirable.
