AIR OPERATIONS ASSISTANT
Organizational Context
The United Nations Support Office in Haiti (UNSOH) provides support to various entities including the Gang Suppression Force, BINUH, Haitian National Police, and Haitian Armed Forces, as well as technical assistance to the Organization of American States. This temporary Air Operations Assistant position is located in the Air Terminal Unit of the Aviation Section in Santo Domingo and reports to the Chief Air Terminal Unit.
Job Purpose
The Air Operations Assistant is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient air transportation of personnel, equipment, and goods to and from the field mission. This role involves carrying out ramp operations, maintaining ramp discipline, and enforcing safety zones. The assistant will coordinate with ground handling agents, assist aircrew, manage flight-related information, and ensure compliance with safety procedures. They will also coordinate with the UNSOH Mission Air Operation Center and local authorities to support mission air operations, including managing airport passes and authorizations.
Responsibilities
Key duties include executing ramp operations, enforcing safety zones, and maintaining ramp discipline. The role involves assisting aircrew dispatch and coordinating with ground handling agents for all mission aircraft operations, covering services like cleaning, equipment, refueling, and transportation. Responsibilities extend to monitoring airfield notices (NOTAMs), supporting refueling safety, guiding passengers during boarding/disembarkation, and conducting basic checks of ground support equipment. The assistant will coordinate FOD campaigns, maintain operational records, report incidents, and liaise with the UNSOH Mission Air Operation Center and local authorities for necessary support and authorizations.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in Air Transport Operations is required. This is reduced to three years for candidates with a first-level university degree. Experience in ramp safety and/or aircraft ground handling practices is essential. Basic radio communication skills and physical fitness for outdoor ramp work are desirable.
