The International Trade Centre (ITC), part of the UN Secretariat, seeks a National Consultant to support Ethiopia's WTO Accession process. This home-based role in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, will provide critical research, analysis, and technical assistance to Ethiopia's Negotiating Team and the WTO Secretariat over a six-month period.
Job Purpose
The primary purpose of this national consultancy is to provide high-quality research, analytical inputs, and technical assistance to advance Ethiopia's WTO accession process. The consultant will map and analyze Ethiopia's trade and economic regimes, translate findings into actionable advice for negotiations, and facilitate coordination between domestic stakeholders and the WTO Secretariat. This role is crucial for ensuring the effective and expeditious advancement of Ethiopia's accession to the WTO, contributing to its integration into the global trading system.
Responsibilities
The consultant will conduct comprehensive legal, policy, and economic analyses of Ethiopia's trade-related issues, assessing domestic regimes against WTO requirements to identify gaps and alignment opportunities. Key duties include preparing high-quality analytical and official documentation, such as inputs for the Working Party Report, briefing notes, and concept papers. The role involves assisting the Negotiating Team in drafting and reviewing accession-related documents, position papers, and correspondence. Additionally, the consultant will support the WTO Secretariat in compiling and verifying negotiating inputs, preparing meeting reports, and tracking progress. Responsibilities also extend to supporting the organization of technical assistance activities, capacity-building workshops, and facilitating stakeholder consultations.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressive professional experience in international trade policy, multilateral trade relations, and economic affairs is required. Demonstrated experience supporting WTO accession processes, including drafting and reviewing accession documentation and coordinating with stakeholders, is essential. Proven experience in conducting legal, policy, and economic analysis of trade issues is also necessary.
