Organizational Context
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) offers internship positions within the Division on International Trade and Commodities (DITC), specifically in the Trade in Services Section. This is an unpaid, full-time internship program designed to provide students and recent graduates with practical experience in international trade and development work.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide students and recent graduates with valuable educational experience and practical exposure to the work of the United Nations, specifically within UNCTAD's Division on International Trade and Commodities. Interns will gain hands-on experience in areas related to international trade, services, and development. The role contributes to the division's work program by supporting research, analysis, and the organization of events, thereby enhancing the intern's understanding of global trade dynamics and UN operations while assisting the team in achieving its objectives.
Responsibilities
Interns will support the Trade in Services Section by attending meetings and preparing summary reports. Key duties include assisting with communication and outreach activities, organizing and servicing webinars, round tables, and seminars. They will also provide input for technical cooperation programs and projects, and draft materials for technical papers and analytical studies on services trade data and policy. Additionally, interns will help prepare presentations for team members and perform other related duties as required. Training and mentoring will be provided by supervisors and colleagues.
Work Experience
No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, applicants must be pursuing or have completed a relevant university degree. A field of study closely related to international trade, services, or development is necessary. Applicants must meet the educational criteria of being enrolled in or having completed a graduate program or the final year of a bachelor's program.
Skills
Computer literacy in standard software applications; demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations; personal commitment to UN Charter ideals; ability to interact with diverse cultural backgrounds; willingness to understand differing opinions. Knowledge of Excel is desirable; Power BI, Stata, or R are advantageous. Fluency in English is required; other UN languages are desirable.
