Organizational Context
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna, Austria, is seeking a Legal Affairs Intern. This internship is within the Office of the Director-General, supporting the Legal Team. The role offers practical and educational experience in a multicultural, intergovernmental setting, focusing on general legal affairs.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide law students with professional experience within the legal office of an international organization. The intern will gain practical and educational exposure, applying and developing knowledge of International Public Law and the UN legal framework within the operational context of UNODC. The role contributes to the Legal Team's work by assisting with legal research, document drafting, and maintaining registers related to UN privileges and immunities, offering a valuable learning opportunity in international legal affairs.
Responsibilities
The Legal Affairs Intern will support the Senior Legal Advisor and Associate Legal Officer. Key duties include reviewing and assisting in the drafting of various legal documents, such as cooperation agreements, project agreements, correspondence, and memoranda. The intern will also help compile a register of issues concerning UN privileges and immunities and support the review and consolidation of host country agreements. Additionally, the role involves conducting legal research on international law, the law of international organizations, and related specializations using diverse research resources.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a strong academic background in legal affairs, with a preference for international law, is essential. Experience in conducting legal research and producing legal analysis is desirable.

Demonstrated interest in the UN's work and commitment to its Charter ideals. Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions. Good drafting skills. Demonstrable experience in legal research and analysis. Excellent communication skills (desirable). Knowledge of an additional official UN language (desirable).
