Organizational Context
The United Nations Secretariat's Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), specifically the Office of Intergovernmental Support and Coordination for Sustainable Development (OISC), Operational Activities Policy Branch (OAPB), is seeking an intern in New York. This role supports intergovernmental processes related to sustainable development and operational activities within the UN development system.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience in sustainable development and intergovernmental support within the UN Secretariat. The intern will contribute to research, data analysis, and the preparation of substantive documents and reports for high-level meetings. The role supports senior officials and Member States by facilitating information gathering, analysis, and the organization of key events. The position offers exposure to the UN's operational activities and policy-making processes, contributing to the effective coordination and implementation of sustainable development goals. The internship is designed to be a full-time, in-person engagement, with potential for adjustment based on candidate needs, and typically lasts between three to six months.
Responsibilities
Conduct research on sustainable development and UN development system operational activities. Analyze qualitative and quantitative data, creating visualizations and infographics. Support the development and deployment of surveys related to operational activities. Assist in organizing high-level panels and seminars, preparing summaries of outcomes. Provide support for informal consultations on intergovernmental legislation. Monitor and summarize intergovernmental meetings of ECOSOC and the General Assembly. Perform additional tasks as required to support senior officials and Member States, including short-notice assignments. Ensure diligent work and high-quality outputs.
Work Experience
No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, a strong academic background in a relevant field and the ability to conduct research and analyze data are expected. Practical experience in data visualization or survey support is beneficial.
