Organizational Context
The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa seeks an intern for its Information, Communication and Technology Services Section (ICTSS). This role provides technical and operational support to the Publications, Conference, and Knowledge Management Division (PCKMD), operating under the direct supervision of the Chief, ICTSS, and the NetCom Team Leader.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide technical and operational support within the Information, Communication and Technology Services Section (ICTSS) at the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). The intern will contribute to key initiatives including LAN & WLAN upgrades, network troubleshooting, maintenance, and monitoring. Responsibilities encompass supporting installation, configuration, and testing of network equipment, diagnosing and resolving connectivity issues, maintaining firewall rules, documenting security risks, and monitoring network performance. The role also involves assisting with general ICT support, preparing technical documentation, participating in team meetings, and supporting asset management. This position offers a practical learning experience in network infrastructure and ICT support within a UN environment.
Responsibilities
Provide technical and operational support for LAN & WLAN upgrade works, including installation, configuration, and testing of new wireless access points and LAN equipment. Assist in upgrading existing network infrastructure components to ensure optimal coverage, speed, and reliability. Conduct site surveys and signal strength analysis to validate WLAN performance. Document configurations, device placements, and test results. Assist in diagnosing and resolving network connectivity issues, bandwidth bottlenecks, and device configuration errors. Support the review and maintenance of firewall rules and configurations. Document observed security risks, incidents, and responses. Monitor network performance using diagnostic tools and contribute to performance reports. Perform routine maintenance tasks, including firmware and software updates on network devices. Maintain accurate network topology diagrams and device inventories. Assist in reviewing security policies and compliance status. Support evaluation of security considerations for field devices, sensors, and IoT devices. Provide general ICT support for other projects within ICTSS. Assist with the preparation of technical documentation, standard operating procedures, and user guides. Participate in team meetings, project planning, and knowledge-sharing activities. Support asset management and network equipment inventory updates.
Work Experience
Applicants to the UN Internship Program are not required to have professional work experience. However, a relevant field of study is necessary. Experience with network infrastructure, troubleshooting, and ICT support is beneficial.
