ICT support in IT Network maintenance and upgrade works

Organizational Context

The United Nations Secretariat, specifically the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa, seeks an intern for the Digital and Information Technology Management Section (DITMS). This role operates under the direct supervision of the Chief, DITMS, and the day-to-day guidance of the Network Technology Team Leader, supporting the Administration, Conference Management Division.

Job Purpose

This internship provides technical and operational support within the Digital and Information Technology Management Section (DITMS) at the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). The intern will contribute to key initiatives including LAN & WLAN upgrades, network troubleshooting, maintenance, and monitoring. The role aims to assist in diagnosing and resolving network issues, supporting security configurations, maintaining network documentation, and performing routine maintenance tasks. Additionally, the intern will provide general ICT support for other projects, assist in preparing technical documentation, and participate in team activities, contributing to the overall efficiency and reliability of the ECA's IT network infrastructure.

Responsibilities

Provide technical and operational support for LAN & WLAN upgrade works, including installation, configuration, and testing of new wireless access points and LAN equipment. Assist in upgrading network infrastructure components to ensure optimal performance. Conduct site surveys and signal strength analysis for WLAN validation. Document configurations, device placements, and test results. Assist in diagnosing and resolving network connectivity issues, bandwidth problems, and device configuration errors. Support the review and maintenance of firewall rules. Document security risks, incidents, and responses. Monitor network performance using diagnostic tools and contribute to performance reports. Perform routine maintenance, including firmware and software updates on network devices. Maintain accurate network topology diagrams and device inventories. Assist in reviewing security policies and compliance. Provide general ICT support for other projects within DITMS. Assist in preparing technical documentation, standard operating procedures, and user guides. Participate in team meetings and project planning sessions. Support asset management and network equipment inventory updates.

Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, applicants must be pursuing or have completed a relevant university degree program.
