INFORMATION SYSTEMS ASSISTANT/DATA VISUALIZATION (Temporary Job Opening)

Organizational Context

This position is situated within the Communications and External Relations office of the UN Secretariat's Trade and Development department (UNCTAD) in Geneva. The role reports to a Chief of Section or a senior Information Systems Assistant, operating centrally within the organization.

Job Purpose

The Data Visualization Information Systems Assistant is responsible for developing and implementing advanced interactive digital products and data visualizations to communicate complex trade and economic information effectively to diverse audiences. This involves creating engaging digital formats, analyzing web and social media performance to optimize content strategy and user experience, and supporting the planning, design, and development of web application systems and digital solutions. The role also includes liaising with users and experts to define requirements, translating data into accessible formats, and maintaining functional specifications for developed systems. Additionally, the assistant will prepare training materials, conduct presentations, and contribute to the enhancement of the Drupal CMS and website content, ensuring optimal delivery and user navigation.

Responsibilities

Develops data visualizations, interactive digital products, and narrative experiences to communicate complex trade and economic information. Designs, tests, and implements web application systems and digital products adhering to UN IT standards. Conducts web analytics and social media engagement analysis, providing recommendations for content strategy and user experience improvement. Collaborates in the planning, design, development, and support of web systems and data visualization solutions, liaising with users and experts to define requirements. Supports the implementation and enhancement of web applications, monitoring performance and recommending improvements for user experience and content presentation. Prepares training materials and conducts data visualization presentations. Maintains functional specifications for developed systems and participates in website development and ongoing maintenance. Collaborates on the creation and enhancement of the Drupal CMS. Serves as a focal point for data visualization coordination and technical monitoring of web projects, liaising across divisions. Stays updated on field developments, performs benchmarking, and proposes new acquisitions. Provides guidance to junior staff.

Work Experience

Seven years of experience in information systems analysis, programming, systems administration, data visualization, software development, or technical writing is required. Experience with Drupal website development, modern web development (HTML5, CSS, JavaScript), and tools like Datawrapper is required. Experience with advanced data visualization tools (D3.js, highcharts), international organizations, and transforming trade/macroeconomic data into visually appealing formats is desirable.
