United Nations Environment Programme
IMEO Methane Science Postdoc Fellow
Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme's International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is a key initiative focused on driving significant reductions in methane emissions to combat climate change and achieve Paris Agreement goals. IMEO collects and reconciles data from various sources, including satellites, scientific studies, and industry reporting, to provide actionable methane data. This role supports IMEO's science team in its mission.
Job Purpose
The Methane Science Postdoc Fellow will contribute to IMEO's mission by collecting and analyzing field measurement data from fossil fuel emission sources. This role involves producing scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, developing campaign design documents, and generating analytical reports with data summaries and validated datasets. The fellow will also create study proposals, presentation materials, and stakeholder progress reports, directly supporting IMEO's efforts to reduce methane uncertainty and advance methane mitigation strategies globally. The position is for 12 months and is remote.
Responsibilities
Collect and analyze field measurement data from fossil fuel related emission sources. Develop scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals covering methane quantification and sectoral analysis. Create campaign design documents for global oil and gas measurement campaigns. Generate analytical reports including comprehensive data summaries and validated datasets. Prepare study proposals, presentation materials, and stakeholder progress reports. Assist in developing IMEO's methane science direction. Review scientific proposals for funding. Contribute to reducing uncertainty in the magnitude and location of methane emissions across various sectors.
Work Experience
Minimum of 3 years of experience in atmospheric methane and emission data analysis. Experience in performing rigorous analysis with short deadlines is essential. Proficiency in programming languages like R or Python for large dataset analysis is required. Experience with qualitative analysis and atmospheric sampling in a field environment is also needed.
Skills
Scientific writing for peer-reviewed journals, methane quantification and sectoral analysis, campaign design, data analysis (R, Python), qualitative analysis, atmospheric sampling, knowledge of Oil & Gas sector methane emissions.
