Organizational Context
This position is within the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) in Mogadishu. The Senior Logistics Officer leads the Mission Support Centre (MSC), reporting to the Chief of Operations and Resource Management. The MSC is crucial for planning, coordinating, and delivering logistics support to mandated clients, including AUSSOM, UNTMIS, and Somali Security Forces.
Job Purpose
The Senior Logistics Officer, as Chief of the Mission Support Centre (MSC) in Mogadishu, is responsible for providing comprehensive managerial and supervisory oversight of all logistics support operations to fulfill the UNSOS mandate. This includes developing, coordinating, and monitoring logistics plans, forecasting needs, managing supply chains, and resolving urgent operational requirements. The role involves liaising with UN Headquarters, client missions, and other entities to ensure effective and timely logistics support, including troop redeployments and rotations. The incumbent will also contribute to policy development, advise senior management on logistics strategies, and ensure that logistics requirements consider gender-specific needs, ultimately aligning operations with strategic objectives and ensuring efficient mission support.
Responsibilities
Provide overall managerial and supervisory oversight for all logistics support activities aligned with the UNSOS mandate. Develop, coordinate, and monitor comprehensive logistics support plans, encompassing forecasting, supply scheduling, prioritization of requirements, and resolution of urgent operational needs. Monitor and coordinate multi-functional logistics requirements across UN Headquarters, AUSSOM, UNTMIS, UNSOS, and other field missions. Contribute to the development and refinement of policies and procedures governing UNSOS client support. Act as the principal liaison for logistics matters with mandated clients, including AUSSOM, UNTMIS, and SSF, facilitating troop redeployments and coordinating bilateral/donor support. Ensure effective planning and coordination of logistics support for client missions, including peacekeeping presence in regional offices, and integrate gender-specific needs. Advise senior management on logistics management, structures, and staffing to align with operational needs and strategic objectives. Lead assessment missions, manage integrated civilian-military mission support organizations, and oversee regional administrative functions and Contingent-Owned Equipment programs.
Work Experience
A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in land or air transport, logistics operations within military, commercial, or international organizations is required. Experience in a UN Common System field operation or similar international organization in a conflict/post-conflict setting is desirable.
