The Dag Hammarskjöld Library, part of the UN Secretariat's Department of Global Communications, supports the UN's mission by providing access to information and knowledge. The UN Policy Pulse project, a collaboration with ETH Zurich, leverages UN voting and deliberative datasets curated since 1946, enhancing their accessibility through interactive tools and visualizations.
Job Purpose
This internship within the Dag Hammarskjöld Library supports the UN Policy Pulse project, which aims to activate and visualize UN voting and deliberative datasets. The intern will contribute to the preparation, curation, and quality control of these datasets, as well as assist in the development, testing, and refinement of data visualizations and user-facing features. The role also involves supporting the extension of the project to new datasets, designing analytical views, ensuring data accuracy and provenance, documenting workflows, and exploring the application of generative AI tools, all under the guidance of the Information and Data Analytics Unit.
Responsibilities
Assist in preparing, curating, and ensuring the quality control of UN voting and deliberative datasets, including resolutions, voting records, and speeches. Contribute to the development, testing, and refinement of data visualizations and user-facing features for the UN Policy Pulse prototype. Support the extension of existing features to include additional UN voting datasets, such as those from the Security Council and Human Rights Council. Ensure data accuracy, provenance, and clear citation for all data points, linking back to UN Digital Library records. Document workflows and contribute to materials for the prototype's handover and scaling. Explore the responsible application of generative AI and data-analysis tools. Perform other related duties as required.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a strong understanding of software applications used in data and statistical analysis, as well as data visualization, is necessary. Familiarity with generative AI tools is considered an asset.
